Traveling can be a ton of fun, especially if you are studying abroad at a school like University of Cincinnati. However, if you don’t know how to stay safe, then things can sour very quickly. You want to be sure that you know how to protect yourself and prevent all kinds of accidents from happening by applying common sense in every situation. Here is how to travel safely while you’re in college.
Wear Modest Attire
No matter where you travel there are going to be certain trends that you will see in the way that people dress. While you may want to express yourself freely while you are traveling, there are some places where this really isn’t safe. Not only do you want to make sure you aren’t exposing parts of your body that most other people aren’t exposing, but you also want to make sure you don’t wear anything that will make you look extremely wealthy if the people around you are not. So be modest with everything.
Keep Your Distance with Strangers
There’s no reason why you shouldn’t have fun going out and meeting new people in all of the places that you visit, but you want to make sure that you don’t go home with anyone that you don’t know. You also don’t want to invite anyone over to the place where you’re staying if you don’t actually know them – especially if you are by yourself. You just never know what someone’s intentions are when you first meet them.
Don’t Leave Your Drinks Unattended
Any time you are in a bar or restaurant, you want to make sure that you never leave your drink unattended. If you have to go to the bathroom, ask someone you trust to watch your drink, or finish it before you go to the bathroom. You can always get a refill when you get back if you really want to, but if you aren’t careful, you could fall prey to someone who may want to take advantage of you.
Protect Your Valuables
In addition to not wanting to leave your drinks unattended, you don’t want to leave any of your valuables unattended either. You want to always travel as light as possible so that you can fit all of your most valuable items in zippered pockets, and you want to make sure that you always take your backpack or other baggage with you when you get up to use the bathroom or make a phone call. It doesn’t take long for someone to realize that you are not paying attention to your things.
Beware of Con Artists
Whenever you are traveling in a foreign country, you want to be on the look out for con artists. Every country has its unscrupulous characters and they all operate in very different ways with very specific cons. If you are in an area where there is a lot of tourism, then you can bet that there will be a lot of pick pockets and con artists. Any time you think someone might be trying to con you, then you want to make sure that you can disengage with them as quickly as possible.
