How to Hire an Architectural Firm

Many people are faced with the very stressful task of hiring an architectural firm. This is a huge decision because the quality of the structure you want to build will be determined by the design that the architect comes up with. This is why the hiring process is so critical and something you cannot take for granted. You might have never hired an architect before. If this is the case, you would be wise to find out as much as you can about what to look for. Do not make the mistake of thinking that all architects are basically the same. You will quickly discover that their skill levels are drastically different. Here is how your architect hiring process should go in order to get the best results.

1. Find an architectural firm that has designed many buildings similar to the one you are planning.

It is very common for architectural firms to specialize in designing particular types of structures. Therefore, you will need to look around until you find several that have a long track record of designing the type of building you are interested in. Take a look at the history of each firm. How long have they been in business? How many buildings have they designed? Can they help you find liturgical furnishings if you hire them to design a church? Take a look at photos of their previous work. If possible, visit some of the buildings in person. This will allow you to get an idea of the quality of work you will be getting if you hire that particular firm.

2. How long will it take the firm to finish their work?

You will find that architectural firms work at much different speeds. You might be in a situation where you need construction on your building to be started by a specific date. Therefore, it is imperative that you find a firm that will be able to meet your deadline. Some firms will not want to be rushed. Others will thrive under the pressure. Ideally, you should give the firm enough time to do their best work.

3. Negotiate a fair price for the project.

Talk to each firm on your list and find out how much they expect to be paid. Some firms might be willing to negotiate with you if they know you are actively talking to other firms.
